The Worldwide Standard Vapor Pressure Tester
MINIVAP VPS and VPSH are extremely versatile instruments for the automatic determination of the vapor pressure behavior of gasoline and gasoline oxygenated blends, live and dead crude oil, solvents and other chemical compounds. The VPS and VPSH are the world wide standard instruments used by all major refineries, oil and pipeline companies, independent laboratories and car manufacturers.
The US-EPA declared MINIVAP as the official reference instrument for the USA. MINIVAP VPS/H are stand-alone units that do not require any accessories. The unique piston based design for automatic sample introduction and volume expansion of the measuring cell makes an expensive and bulky vacuum pump unnecessary. The Grabner measuring principle in combination with the latest standards; ASTM D6377 (for Crude Oil) and ASTM D6378 (for Gasoline) avoids tedious sample chilling and air saturation.
This new technology significantly increases refinery profits: it reduces expensive labor time, eliminates operator bias and has a considerably improved test precision that offers the advantage to blend closer to the limits and avoid product give-away. MINIVAP VPS is mostly used for QC purposes while VPSH offers even more features for crude oil and R&D applications, like volatility studies at elevated temperatures and very low vapor/liquid ratios.
PISTON BASED TECHNIQUE
The unique measuring principle with the integrated piston for automatic sample introduction and expansion offers high accuracy and easy operation and eliminates the use of a vacuum pump.
DVPE OF GASOLINE
ASTM D5191, the standard "Mini-Method" uses only 1 mL of sample, is measured against vacuum and a has correlation formula for the calculation of the DVP.
Sample preparation, including cooling of the sample to 0°C (32°F) and triple air saturation prior to measurement is required.
YOU CERTAINLY HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO THAN COOLING AND AIR SATURATION!
The new ASTM standards D6377 and D6378 constitute real milestones in the history of vapor pressure determination.
Due to the outstanding measuring principle of MINIVAP, the sample preparation prior to measurement is not necessary.
You save expensive labor time, have significantly better precision and possible operator bias is eliminated.
VAPOR PRESSURE OF GASOLINE - THE LATEST MINI-METHOD
ASTM D6378 is the "Triple Expansion Method" with determination of the dissolved air in the sample. It was developed by GRABNER INSTRUMENTS and replaces ASTM D5191. Cooling and air saturation is NOT required!
VAPOR PRESSURE OF CRUDE OIL - THE OFFICIAL METHOD
ASTM D6377 is the new "Single-Expansion Method" for vapor pressure of Crude Oil, developed by GRABNER INSTRUMENTS. The pressurized sample is transferred into the measuring chamber and expanded to the final volume by the built-in piston. The precision of this method is better than the classical ASTM method of D323 (ASTM correlation formula is available). Due to the outstanding measuring principle of MINIVAP, the sample preparation prior to the measurement is not necessary. You save expensive labor time, have better precision and any operator bias is eliminated.
APPLICATIONS
MINIVAP testers are utilized in most major oil and pipeline companies as well as independent test laboratories worldwide. The US-EPA declared the "Grabner" instrument (MINIVAP VPS) the reference for the USA. Applications include the routine vapor pressure testing of gasoline, gasoline-oxygenate blends and crude oil, the rapid determination of vapor pressure in laboratories and production control facilities, as well as screening and testing directly in the field.
LABORATORY
Applications include the compliance control for vapor pressure of gasoline and crude oil in the laboratory, production plant and testing directly on-site (battery option). MINIVAP VPSH further allows volatility studies at elevated temperatures and vapor pressure determination of crude oil at very low vapor liquid ratios.
ON-LINE
MINIVAP ON-LINE is installed for vapor pressure compliance control of gasoline, crude oil and LPG.

Principle
The sample is contained in a 10 mL syringe (3) or in a sample container for direct sampling. The automatic sample introduction and volume adjustments are made by a piston with an integrated pressure transducer (1). The measuring chamber (2) with a total volume of 5 mL is automatically rinsed and filled with 1 mL for the measuring process. After closing the valve (4) driven by the valve motor (5), the volume expansion to 5 mL (with the sample under vacuum condition) is obtained by a further stroke of the piston. The temperature of the measuring cell is controlled with a high-power thermoelectric module (6) and measured with a precision Platinum RTD sensor (7). After the sample introduction and the volume expansion, the test temperature is adjusted. After the equilibrium time, the measurement of the dissolved air is completed. Test results of DVPE, ASVP, Pgas and Pabs are displayed and printed.
